The Centennial Campaign

Campaign Goals

T

hroughout its first century, Reed College has wrestled with a persistent set of challenges. The college’s endowment has grown impressively in recent decades, but still is not able to fully support the admission of every deserving applicant, regardless of financial need. Despite steady improvement in student retention, not enough students are yet able to complete the journey from Hum 110 to thesis orals. Expanded recruitment of students and faculty from underrepresented groups and varied backgrounds has enabled the college only now to glimpse the full educational benefits of attaining a truly diverse community. The college’s small size, though a treasured virtue, unavoidably constrains its ability to incorporate emerging fields of knowledge into the curriculum. Limited enrollments and resource limitations still prevent some academic departments, such as those in the performing arts, from achieving their potential.

On the eve of its centennial, Reed College launches a fund-raising campaign to address this unfinished agenda. The campaign aims to raise $200 million to strengthen the three core values that have animated Reed since its inception — inquiry, community, and integrity. By achieving the campaign’s goals, Reed’s centennial generation will not only renew the college’s commitment to its historic ideals, but will also leave a permanent stamp on the college comparable to that imprinted by the founding generation.

The campaign is built around the three core values that have animated Reed since its inception — inquiry, community, and integrity
